Douglas Sawyer

Douglas “Doug” M. Sawyer, age 69, of Granite City, IL, passed away on Monday, April 1, 2024, at Anderson Hospital, Maryville, IL. Doug was born on January 16, 1955, in Springfield, IL, a son of the late Clyde M. Sawyer and Berniece K. (Oldenettel) Sawyer.

Doug married Jayne Metzger on May 22, 1975 in Moberly, MO. He was employed at Gateway Regional Medical Center as a Medical Technologist and retired in 2020 after 38 years. He enjoyed woodworking and specialized in making custom ukuleles, which he gifted to many friends and family members. Doug was also an avid reader on several topics and especially enjoyed materials on WW II history, mysteries, and tales of the Old West. He was a fan of bluegrass music and 70’s rock-and-roll…. which we all know was the best era for rock music! With every new year, he looked forward to Spring and the opening of another St. Louis Cardinals baseball season. Doug will always be remembered as a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, brother-in-law, uncle, and a dear friend to many. He will be sadly missed by those who knew and loved him.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Jayne Sawyer of Granite City, IL; loving children, Rory Sawyer of Granite City, IL and Angie (David) Bagwill of Godfrey, IL; siblings, Thomas (Carol) Sawyer of California, MO and Brenda (Steve) Umphress of Colorado Springs, CO; proud grandfather to Summer, Braxton, Deacon and Daisy; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Jay and Cindy Metzger of Ashdown, AR; sister-in-law, Judy Argabright of Calhoun, GA; nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Doug’s wishes were to be cremated and to have no formal services.
