Dorothy Virginia (Clayton) Cannon passed away at 10:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 11, 2009 at Alton Memorial Hospital. She was born on August 7, 1925 in Alton to Richard and Alta Marie (Bunyan) Clayton. She graduated from Alton High School in 1944. In her early years, she was a member of Elm Street Presbyterian Church in Alton. She had been a licensed beautician and later a licensed real estate salesperson. She is survived by her loving companion, Arthur Coontz, two daughters and sons-in-law, Cindy (Smith) Maple and her husband Jim and Jan (Smith) Campbell and her husband Kenny, four grandchildren; Kim Maple-Colley and her husband Lee, Jaime Sumpter, Chad Campbell and Christopher Campbell and one great grandchild, Mallory Sumpter all of Godfrey, one brother, John Clayton and one sister, Charlene Holmes. She was preceded in death by her parents, her second husband, John D. Cannon, one brother, Norman Clayton and one sister, Marcella Thomas. In accordance with her wishes, her body was cremated. A memorial service will be held at Gent Funeral Home in Alton at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 14, 2009. The Reverend David Olson will officiate. Memorials may be made to the 5A's Animal Shelter, the Oasis Women's Center or to Twelfth Street Presbyterian Church.
