Dorothy Garner Hanlon, 80, of Sterling died at 7:25 a.m. Thursday, March 4th at CGH Medical Center in Sterling.
She was born September 15, 1929 in Jasper, Tennessee, the daughter of John Garner and Lucille (Allen) Wille.
She married Edward F. Hanlon of Alton on December 29, 1950 and together they raised their family in Alton. From 1977 to 1990, she and Edward lived in Upstate New York (Fulton) and Lawrenceburg, Indiana during Edward’s tenure with Owens-Illinois and Anchor Glass Companies. Following Edward’s retirement in 1990, they settled in Sterling.
Dorothy was deeply devoted to her family and faith. She was an active member of S.S. Peter & Paul CatholicChurch, Alton, Holy Family Catholic Church, Fulton, St. Lawrence Parish, Lawrenceburg and St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Sterling.
Surviving are three sons, Dr. Shawn P. (Nancy) Hanlon of Sterling, Cullen F. Hanlon of Northbrook, IL, and E. Shamus (Kim) Hanlon of Evanston, IL; one daughter, Mollie K. (Dr. Martin J. Corless) Hanlon of Clarks Hill, IN, eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents and sisters, Mae Mugge, Sissy Hawkins and Lee Cornwell, and her beloved husband Edward who died on December 25, 2009.
Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Friday, March 19th at Staten-Fine Funeral Home, 220 Court Street, Alton. Celebration of the Mass of Christian burial will be held at 12 Noon on Saturday, March 20 at S.S. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Alton, IL with the Rev. Delix Michel presiding.
Burial services will follow at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Alton. Arrangements will be completed by Staten-Fine Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made in her memory to St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Sterling or S.S. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Alton or toward masses.
