Doris Nance Conley, 92, passed away at 3:40pm, Friday November 30, 2012 at Blu-Fountain Manor in Godfrey, IL.

 

She was born in Fayetteville, NC on April 10, 1920.

As a young girl, she worked in her father’s garage as a mechanic. She left home at age 16 and went to NYC where she joined the Ice Capades as a skater. In 1940 she became a Pinkerton Detective in Chicago. She then joined the army in 1943 and served as a WAC in Washington DC during WWII, where she met and married Loy A. Conley, Commander in the US Navy, in 1955. They purchased a ranch in Arkansas after his retirement from the Navy and they had a winter home in Mazatlan, Mexico. They were both active in Arkansas politics, helping to elect Gov. Rockefeller and also active in teaching orphans trade skills in Mexico. Commander Loy Conley died in Mazatlan, in 1978.

Mrs. Conley is survived by her son, Michael E. Conley and his wife Carole H. Conley of Godfrey; two granddaughters, Erin Heil and Jennifer Krafka and two great grandchildren, John and Kattie Krafka.

In accordance to her wishes, cremation rights will be accorded.
