She was born in Middlesex, England on June 17, 1918, and was one of three daughters born to John & Clara (Williams) Travers.
She grew up in England, and met her husband, Edgar Wendle, while he was stationed with the U.S. Air Force during World War II. The two married in London on Nov. 11, 1944 and after his discharge they returned to the United States where they made their home in Jersey County and raised their five children. Edgar & Doreen were blessed with 62 years together before his death on Apr. 16, 2007. A loving wife and mother, she and her husband owned and operated Sessels Clothing Store in downtown Jerseyville for many years, retiring in 1974.
Surviving are a daughter & son in law, Janice & Thomas Rathgeb of Brighton; four sons & daughters in law, Stephen Wendle of Alton, Denis & Nancy Wendle of Jerseyville, Kenneth & Mary Wendle of Alton, and Mark Wendle of Jerseyville; 10 grandchildren & their spouses, Michael & Melinda Rathgeb and Christopher & Sally Rathgeb all of Edwardsville, Nicholas & Alicia Rathgeb of New Berlin, Jessica & Brad Kimble of Jerseyville, Christine & Todd Lacy of Jerseyville, Heidi Wendle and Rebecca Wendle both of Springfield, TJ Wendle of New York City, Brian Wendle of Normal, and Brigid Wendle of Glen Carbon; 15 Great Grandchildren; and two nieces, Wendy Marks and Kathleen Kimber both of England.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, along with two sisters, Pat Thomas & Peggy Marks.
Visitation will be from 8:30-9:45 a.m., Tuesday at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Jerseyville, with Father William Hembrow officiating.
Burial will be in St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery in Alton.
Memorials may be given to the St. Francis/Holy Ghost Catholic Schools in Jerseyville or to Masses.
