Donald Hemmer

Donald W. Hemmer, 79, passed away at 10:49 pm Monday, August 29, 2016, at Christian Hospital in St. Louis.He was born March 25, 1937, in DuQuion, Illinois, to the late Oscar William and Frances Lorraine (Howerton) Hemmer. After the loss of his father, who was killed in WWII, he was raised by the late Fredrick Enoch Harrell.  He married Claudine Barber on May 2, 1959, in St. Louis, MO. She survives.Donald worked for The Teamsters Local 600, for over 30 years, as a truck driver before retiring from Foxmeyer Pharmaceuticals. His family and friends will remember him as a family man. Donald was a veteran of the United States Army.In addition to his wife, survivors include three children and their spouses, Jack and Nicole Pennell of Monticello, MN, Kathern Loyd of Granite City, Brian and Leisa Hemmer of Edwardsville; five grandchildren, Jacob Loyd, Joshua Hemmer and his wife Corie, Stephen Loyd, Justin Hemmer and his wife Beth, Tayler Pennell; one great granddaughter, Stella; three siblings, Oscar Hemmer of Imperial, MO, Dorothy Harrell of South Bend, IN, and Ozzie Hemmer of St. Louis, MO.He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Nelly LeGrand.Visitation will be from 12:00 pm, noon, until time of memorial service at 2pm, on Saturday, September 3, 2016, at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto, with Pastor Charles West officiating.Cremation rites have been accorded.Memorials may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.An online condolence and guest book may be found at www.eliaskallalandschaaf.com
