Donald Paul Mathias, 80, passed away at 12:56 pm Sunday September 23, 2012 at Pana Community Hospital.
He was born June 16, 1932 in Pana, IL, the son of Edward and Hazel (Eiler) Mathias.
He married Gloria Cassidy on July 4, 1954 at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Princeton, Illinois by Rev. Ervin Beaver. She preceded him in death on January 23, 2012.
Donald served his country in the U.S. Air Force. He worked for Ameren/Illinois Power for over 42 years. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Bethalto and the American Legion. He was a great care taker and a great mentor to his son, Tim and his grandson, Tim which he loved very much.
He is survived by a son, Timothy Paul Mathias of Glen Carbon; a daughter, Kelli Mathias of East Alton; one grandson, Timothy James Mathias of Glen Carbon; his brother, Edward Ray Mathias of Athens, AL and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Mary Mathias and two sisters-in-law, Julie Marcum and Thelma Mathias.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 pm Thursday, September 27, 2012 at Elias, Kallal & Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto.
Funeral services will be at 10 am Friday, September 28, 2012 at Zion Lutheran Church in Bethalto with Pastor Mark Hofferber officiating.
Burial will be private.
Memorials may be made to Zion Lutheran School.
