Donald L. Funk Sr., 81, passed Monday, February 22, 2016 at his home in Alton. Born July 27, 1934 in Alton, he was the son of Bert and Elizabeth (Nolan) Funk. Mr. Funk graduated from Marquette High School in 1953 and served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and a former member of the Alton Knights of Columbus. He was a huge Notre Dame fan and enjoyed spending time with family and camping at Otter Lake. He retired as supervisor from the Alton Box Board/Jefferson Smurfit after over 40 years of service. On January 4, 1958 he married the former Judith K. Dalton in Alton. She preceded him in death on September 18, 2013. Surviving are five children, Joan Funk of Godfrey, Donald Funk Jr. (Diane Marie Carter) of Godfrey, Trish Simpson (Pat) of Piasa, Michael Funk (Lisa) of Alton, and Renee Besta of Point Reys, CA, 11 grandchildren, John (Helen)Fleming, Michael (April) Fleming, Anne Fleming, Cory (Clancy) Maher, Caitlin Lagemann, Donny Funk III (Amy Wuellner), Sara (JL) Bland, Andrew Simpson (Ellie Tonsor), Nicholas (Meghan) Funk, Zachary (Hillary) Funk, and Skylar Funk. Six great grandchildren, Arianna, Aislyn and Amori Fleming, John Fleming Jr., Lincoln Michael Funk, and Evelyn Grace Funk, with four more on the way. Also surviving are four sisters, Bert Roberts of Godfrey, Shirley Wiedman of Godfrey, Margaret (Ron) Wisnasky of Godfrey, and Joan (Alan) Brown of Ladue, MO, and beloved dog and best friend Sam. Along with his parents and wife he was preceded in death by a daughter Beth Fleming, two brothers, Robert Funk and James (Funk) Nolan, and two sisters, Mary Lady and Patricia Funk. Visitation will be from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Friday, February 26, 2016 at Gent Funeral Home in Alton. A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, February 27, 2016 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton. Burial will be at St. Patrick’s Cemetery.
