Donald Ray Knight, 87, of Granite City, Illinois, passed away peacefully at 1:36 a.m. on Saturday, February 21, 2026, at his home, surrounded by the love of his family.
He was born December 8, 1938, in East Prairie, Missouri, a son of the late Jesse H. and Marie (Parker) Knight. Don married the love of his life, Jane A. (Herren) Knight, on December 22, 1957, at the First Baptist Church in Granite City, beginning a devoted marriage that spanned more than 68 years.
Don’s life was defined by perseverance, service, and a strong sense of duty. Leaving high school early to help provide for his family, he later returned to earn his GED and became the first in his family’s generation to attend college, proudly completing his bachelor’s degree. He was also a graduate of the FBI Academy, a reflection of his dedication to professional excellence.
A proud patriot, Don honorably served his country in the United States Navy. He went on to build a distinguished career in law enforcement, serving the community he loved for 23 years with the Granite City Police Department, retiring in 1993 as Police Chief. He also served with the Major Case Squad, further demonstrating his commitment to justice and public safety.
Before entering law enforcement, Don worked at Granite City Steel, and after retirement he continued to serve his community as Director of Security at the Alton Belle Casino for several years.
Don had a deep appreciation for life and adventure. He and Jane cherished many happy years as snowbirds in Sun City, Arizona. Never one to sit still, he pursued many interests over the years — earning his pilot’s license, farming, beekeeping, panning for gold, and enjoying relaxing rounds of golf with friends. Above all, he treasured time spent with his family.
In addition to his beloved wife, Jane, he is survived by four children and their spouses, Ricky D. and Sheila A. Knight of Ellenton, Florida, Tammy and Tom Roberts of Granite City, Craig S. and Amy Knight of Granite City, and Robin L. and Aaron Flynn of Granite City; ten grandchildren, Nick Roberts, Ryan Roberts, Eric Flynn, Alex Flynn, Chase Knight, Abby Knight, Tyler Knight, Shallee Knight, Rikki Knight, and Whitney Knight; many great-grandchildren; three siblings and their spouses, Mike and Angie Knight of Goose Creek, Missouri, Sherry and Terry Talley of Granite City, and Joe and Pam Knight of Granite City; along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter-in-law, Julie Knight; five brothers, Eugene, David, Ronnie, Gary, Linzey, and David Knight; and a niece, Terry Knight.
In celebration of his life, visitation will be held at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City, on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. A Police Walk-Through and memorial service will follow at 7:00 p.m., with Reverend Steve McKinney officiating. Burial with full military honors will take place at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery at a later date.
Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Condolences and memories may be shared at www.irwinchapel.com.
