Donald Gehrig

Donald F. "Don" Gehrig, age 88 of Alhambra, IL, died Thursday, October 6, 2022, at Hitz Memorial Home in Alhambra, IL.

He was born on Monday, July 23, 1934, in East Saint Louis, IL, the son of Ehrhardt and Irma (nee Foster) Gehrig.

On Sunday, October 3, 1954, he married Virginia Ann (nee Riggs) Gehrig, who passed away on February 17, 2019.

He was a member of Salem United Church of Christ, Greenville Country Club, and Highland Country Club.

Don was raised in Edwardsville, and at the age of 16 he and his family moved to Alhambra. He graduated from Edwardsville High School in 1952. He played on the high school basketball team, playing on the 1951 State Championship team as the right guard, and played on the high school baseball team, playing on the 1952 State Championship team as the left-handed first baseman. He attended Bradley University business school. He then began working for his father at Gehrig's Store Company, Alhambra, IL. He spent 55 years at Gehrig's Store and for the majority of the years, he and his brother were the business owners and operators. He enjoyed golfing and loved being with family and friends.

"Beth" (Carl) Potthast, Highland, IL; Grandchildren - Kyle (Terrisa) Gehrig; Emily (Significant Other - Joshua Giedeman) Gehrig; Callie (Bubba) Caulk; Tiffany (Fiancé - Mike Opfer) Potthast; Brad (Significant Other - Laci Hudson) Potthast (Twin); Chad Potthast (Twin); Tate (Fiancé - Nathen Ferber) Gehrig; Great Grandchildren - Kanon Gehrig; Brody Bruce; Rory Gehrig; Delayne Gehrig; Arlee Caulk; Brother - Kenneth W. "Ken" Gehrig, Alhambra, IL.

He was preceded in death by Father - Ehrhardt Fred Gehrig - Died 8/22/1991; Mother - Irma A. (nee Foster) Gehrig - Died 2/21/1991; Wife - Virginia A. "Ginny" (nee Riggs) Gehrig - Died 2/17/2019; Grandchild - Heather Ann Potthast - Died 4/15/2019; Great Grandchild - Dayne Gehrig - Stillborn 2/11/2012; Sister-In-Law - Virginia L. "Ginger" (nee Wayne) Gehrig - Died 3/12/2000.

Arrangements are being handled by Dauderman Mortuary in Alhambra, IL.

Visitation will be held from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM on Thursday, October 13, 2022, at Salem United Church of Christ in Alhambra, IL.

The memorial Service will be at 11:00 AM on Thursday, October 13, 2022, at Salem United Church of Christ in Alhambra, IL, with Rev. Jeremy R. Wood, Pastor, officiating.

Interment will be at Salem Cemetery in Alhambra, IL.
