Dennis Jarden

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Dennis Jarden on the 1st of February 2024.

Born in Alton, IL on October 16th 1943 to Dorothy and Irving Jarden, he attended Humboldt elementary, West Junior High, and graduated from Alton High School in 1961. The quote beneath his senior yearbook picture read “He takes things as they come - easy.” He was his little brother Tim's biggest hero.

Dennis was drafted during the Vietnam War, and when asked by a processing officer what role he wanted to serve in the military, Dennis quipped, “Your job”. The joke must have landed, as Dennis spent the duration of his service at Fort Benning, GA and went on to have four children and three grandchildren. Dennis was the type of dad who would drive all over St Louis to get his daughter a pair of silver shoes that she wanted—no, needed--to have. He made excellent pancakes. He played basketball and golf and loved attending Cardinal games with his family. Dennis had a long career in the Telecommunications industry, working for southwestern bell, then AT&T, and finally establishing his own company.

For many years he was a member of the Quincy Optimists, helping with many community projects including the establishment of a skate park. His membership was fitting. Dennis was truly the consummate optimist, and even though he faced difficult health challenges in the last few years of his life, he never complained and was full of happy plans until the very end.

He will be mourned and missed by his family and his many friends, but we take comfort in knowing that, to quote one of his favorite songs, he's “Goin’ up to the spirit in the sky”. Love you dad.
