Delbert “Gene” E. Rhodes, 90, passed away at 5:30 pm Saturday, February 27, 2016 at his residence with his family by his side.
He was born on December 12, 1925 in St. Elmo, IL, the son of Henry Uldridge & Nellie Myrtle (Grubaugh) Rhodes.
He married Bernice Ann (Wolfert) Rhodes on September 6, 1947 in Effingham, IL, she passed away on April 16, 1995. He then married Lois Jean (Durham) on December 27, 1999 in Edwardsville. She survives.
Gene served his country during WWII in the U.S. Navy Air Corp. He was employed at SBC as a telephone tech for 39 years retiring in 1985. He was a member of Our Lady Queen of Peace Church in Bethalto, the Bethalto American Legion Post # 254 and the wood Carvers Club. He enjoyed wood carving, gardening, traveling, camping when he was young and most of all spending time with his family
He is survived by his wife, Lois; three children and their spouses, Daniel Lee and Bonnie Rhodes of Bethalto, Sandra Kay Ingold of East Alton and Mark A. and Sandy Rhodes of Wood River; a daughter-in-law, Cheryl Rhodes of Bethalto; nine grandchildren and their spouses, Kimberly and Patrick Anderson, Dawn Leady, Ryan and Noreen Rhodes, Leah Rhodes, Adam Rhodes, Matt and Amy Rhodes, Seth Daech and Audrey Rhodes, Ashleigh Rhodes and Nick Rhodes and Tonya Smith; nine great grandchildren, Taylor, Rachael, Scott, Austin, Gabby, Corey, Abrey, Jaxxon and Mya; one sister and brother-in-law, Darlene & Clarice Deal of Forsyth, IL; one brother and sister-in-law, Alvin L. and Marie Rhodes of Peru, IN; one brother-in-law, Clyde Orr of New Mexico and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; one son, Kim Eugene Rhodes; one grandson, Scott Taylor Rhodes; one brother, Uldridge “Dale” Rhodes and two sisters, Minni Alice Orr and Joan Stebel.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 pm on Tuesday, March 1, 2016 at Elias, Kallal & Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto.
A funeral Mass will be at 10 am Wednesday, March 2, 2016 at Our Lady Queen of Peace, with Father Tom Liebler officiating.
Burial will be at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto, with full military rites being performed by the Alton VFW Post 1308.
Memorials may be made to the OLQP in Bethalto.
