David Smith

David “Dave” W. Smith, age 69, of Glen Carbon, IL, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 24, 2025, at his home.

Dave was born on June 17, 1956, in Highland, IL, a beloved son of the late Charles “Charlie” and Leona (Houba) Smith.

He honored our country by serving in the U.S. Navy until 1979.

On October 9, 2015, Dave married Tammy (Henke) Henson, in Edwardsville, IL. He retired from Iron Workers Local 392 after many years of dedicated and loyal service, continuing the 150 years of family generation of Iron Workers. A true jack of all trades, Dave could fix or build anything he set his mind to, utilizing his natural ingenuity and craftsmanship. He loved a good challenge, which made him a master at solving crossword puzzles.

Dave had a deep love for the outdoors—whether squirrel hunting, fishing, or camping, nature was his happy place. He especially looked forward to the first snow of the season and watching his favorite movie, “It’s a Wonderful Life” during the holidays. He enjoyed hosting gatherings at ‘Dave’s Place’ and later founded Smith Acres in memory of his late dad, Charlie, for many more generations to love. At home and at camp, he was known as the grill master, especially for his legendary pork steaks that would fall right off the bone. A lifelong St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan, Dave rarely missed a game, finding joy whether listening on the radio or cheering from his favorite chair.

Above all, Dave will be remembered for his generous heart, sharp wit, one-of-a-kind personality, ‘couth’, and the love he shared with those around him. He was a devoted husband, proud father, cherished grandfather, loving brother, and loyal friend. His memory will live on forever in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

Dave is survived by his devoted wife, Tammy Henson of Glen Carbon, IL; loving daughters, Kelly Rae of Beckemeyer, IL, Dana (Kyle) Sardigal of Caseyville, IL, and Danielle (Joseph) Heffernan of Beckemeyer, IL; dear stepchildren, Terianne Edwards and Arthur Henson, both of Glen Carbon, IL; brothers, Randy Smith of Glen Carbon, IL, and Charles “Chuck” (MaryAnn) Smith of Bunker Hill, IL; and his cherished grandchildren, Payton, Tyler, and Alexandra. He is also survived by many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends.

In honoring Dave’s wishes, cremation rites will be accorded, and a celebration of his life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Wounded Warrior Project or the Glen Carbon American Legion.

Condolences may be expressed to the family online at www.irwinchapel.com.
