Darryl Belcher

Swansea |

Darryl Q. Belcher, age 74 of Swansea, IL, born August 11, 1946 in Princeton, IN, passed away on May 11, 2021 at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, MO.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Beatrice (nee Frogge) Belcher; and son, Jason Belcher.

He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Donna (nee Patterson) Belcher, whom he married February 10, 1967; three children:  Angela (Donald) Agnew of St. Louis, MO, Scott (Tami) Belcher of Troy, IL and Josh (Hope) Belcher of Greenville, IL; seven grandchildren:  Kierstan, Reagan, McKenzie (Austin), Paige, Shelby (Joshua), Madilynn and Julius; brother, Loy (Nelda) Belcher of Mountain Home, AR; sister, Marilyn (Jim) McGuire of Caseyville, IL; and his canine companion (Molly).

Darryl began his career as a student in the Jewish Hospital School of Radiologic Technology.  He graduated from the two-year program in June of 1966.  Soon after graduation, he took the national board and passed, becoming a registered radiological technologist and accepted a position at the hospital as staff technologist.  Not long after his graduation, the hospital’s radiological program disbanded.  In 1967 the St. Louis Community College at Forest Park began offering a radiological program.  The hospital decided to become a major affiliate of that program which positively affected Darryl’s future career.

Darryl held various positions at the hospital over his 50 years of employment. From staff technologist, special procedures technologist, cardiopulmonary technologist, clinical instructor, clinical coordinator overseeing the radiological students, and assistant supervisor.  As part of his non-teaching responsibilities in the department of radiology, he worked in conjunction with speech pathology, performing video swallows on patients who were recovering from a stroke.  The success of these patients is what kept him going.  He was a great example of the type of healthcare offered at the hospital.

Away from the hospital, Darryl enjoyed fishing, Scouting – he was a Scout master and committee chairman, and a Deacon at his church at Meadow Heights Baptist Church in Collinsville.  Most of all, he loved spending time with his kids and grandkids.  He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and friend who will be dearly missed.

Visitation will be 4 – 7 p.m. on Monday, May 17, 2021 at Meadow Heights Baptist Church, 1498 Vandalia, Collinsville, IL.  Masks are required to be worn.

Funeral service will be at 7 p.m. following the visitation with Pastor Jim Robinson officiating.

Memorials may be made in Darryl’s honor to Shriner’s Hospital for Children and will be received at the visitation or can be mailed to the funeral home at 2800 N. Center Street, Maryville, IL 62062.
