Darrell "Dean" Melton, 91, passed away 7:15 p.m. Sunday, July 17, 2016 at Rosewood Care Center of Alton.
Born in Walnut Hill on October 18, 1924, he was the son of Virgil and Mary (Garren) Melton.
A World War II army veteran, he had worked as an operating engineer for the Shell Oil Company before retiring.
An avid golfer in the Tuesday Night Leugue, he enjoyed hunting, and in his youth was scouted by the Cardinals for their team.
Dean was a life long member of the 1st Christian Church in Wood River, serving as Deacon and Sunday School teacher over the years.
He married Charlotte M. Toedtle on September 13, 1948 in Lincoln, IL. She died May 5, 2009.
Surviving are two daughters, Debbie (Rick) Grove of East Alton, Barbara (Bob) Friberg of Albuquerque, NM; five grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren with another grandson expected in the near future; three great-great grandchildren; a sister, Mary Lou Garren of Centralia; dear friends, Mark and Barb Thomas and Judy Schupbach.
His parents; wife; and two grandchildren, Erik Grove and Mary Simpson preceded in death.
Visitation ill be from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at the 1st Christian Church in Wood River where services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Thursday.
Burial will follow in Walnut Hill Cemetery near Dix, with military honors presented by the Centralia American Legion Post.
Memorials may be given to the Baptistery Fund of the 1st Christian Church in Wood River.
