Cynthia Smith

Kane |

Cynthia Pearl “Cindy” Smith, 66, passed away at 11:10 a.m., Saturday, December 23, 2023 at her home, following a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born at the family home in Michael, Illinois on April 26, 1957, one of four children born to the late James “Jim” and Peggy “Peg” (Crull) Hazelwonder.

Cindy grew up and resided in Calhoun County for many years, prior to settling in rural Kane, where she has spent the past 16 years.

She married David Smith on June 25, 1999 in Jerseyville, and together they have shared in many wonderful memories together throughout their 24 years of marriage. It was over the course of the past few years, through the tough times, that their love for one another truly shined.

Cindy centered her life around taking care of others. She was employed as a CNA at area nursing homes, prior to accepting a position with the Calhoun County Health Department, where she dedicated 28 years of service, prior to her retirement.

This same desire to care for others carried through in her personal life, as well. She consistently put the needs of others before her own. She was incredibly proud of her three boys, and when her grandchildren came along, they filled her heart with the most precious love and joy that this world could offer.

She was lucky enough to enjoy most of her life in Calhoun County, making many lasting friendships throughout the years. She was a people person, and was always the life of the party. She enjoyed dancing and a throwing darts, often times with an ice cold Coors Light in hand. Following her retirement, she could often be found spending time out in her yard, tending to her flower garden.

She will be missed by all who had the privilege of loving and knowing her, and the precious memories she created with them all will last forever.

Surviving are her husband, David Smith of Kane; two sons and daughters in-law, Brad and Hilda Sprong and Brent and Amanda Sprong, all of Carrollton; a daughter in-law, Mandy Sprong of Hardin; eight grandchildren, Hayden Sprong and his companion, Maggie; Ryley Sprong and his companion, Amber; Abbie Jo, Easton, Austin, Kaitlyn, Harper and Bodhi Sprong; a great grandson, Walker Sprong, with another great grandchild on the way; a brother and sister in-law, James “Jimbo” and Laura Hazelwonder of Hardin; two sisters and brothers in-law, Patty and David Clendenny of Eldred and Pam Newton and her companion, Craig Bertman, of Carrollton.

She will now be reunited in Heaven with her parents and her beloved son, Brett William Sprong, who preceded her in death on February 27, 2022.

Per her wishes, no public services will be held.

For those desiring, memorials may be given to Calhoun County Health Department or to Siteman Cancer Center, in care of Crawford Funeral Home, 1308 State Highway 109, Jerseyville, IL 62052, who has been entrusted with arrangements.
