Cora Shaw

Cottage Hills |

Cora “Maxine” Shaw passed away on Tuesday, October 9, 2018, at her home surrounded by her loving family.  She was born at The Land Between The Lakes, near Eddyville, KY, on January 28, 1930, the only daughter of Gullie and Elizabeth (Elrod) Elliott.

She married Willie S. Hammons in 1945 and came to the Alton area in September of 1947.

Her first job was at Partnoy Garment Factory in 1948.  She later worked at Owens-Illinois Glass in 1950.  Then she stayed home to raise her children.  Much later she worked in home health care and retired from that in 1998.

She had three children with Willie Hammons.  They divorced and she later married Clarence E. Shaw, whom she had three children with.  She leaves behind five children.  Two daughters, Connie  (Larry) Landson, Sandy (Robert) Mansfield.  Two sons, Steven (Cindy) Shaw, Tony (Lee) Shaw, and a stepson Kevin (Lois) Shaw.  18 grandchildren, Donna Millitello, grandson-in-law Dallas Zimmerman, Carrie O’Connell, Kayce Whitlock, Jennifer (Mark) Weller, Olivia Hammons, Leah, Zachary, Alexis, Joshua and Katelyn Shaw, Shane (Sarah) Mansfield, Luke (Jen) Mansfield, Trevor (Cassie) Shaw, Travis (Misty) Shaw, Brandon, Nathan, Arynne, and Andrew Shaw; brother, Richard Elliott; 24 great grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren, 20 step grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Clarence; a son at birth, Larry Hammons, a son, Dennis Hammons; a grandson, Justin Hammons; granddaughter, Cheryl Zimmerman; brothers, Charles, Bobby and Achie Elliott; and a half-sister, Roberta Fitts.

She and her husband were both avid bowlers.  Her husband, children and grandchildren were the most important things in her life.  She had many dear friends, who she loved playing cards and scrabble with. She loved her Church, dancing, reading and traveling.  She never met a stranger and had lots of friends through the years. She was selfless, putting other before herself.

Visitation will be on Sunday, October 14, 2018 from 2 pm to 5 pm at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto, where funeral services will be on Monday, October 15, 2018 at 11 am, with Reverend Jim Grant and Son-in-law Robert Mansfield officiating.  Burial will follow at Valhalla Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, she asked that you donate to a Cancer Fund, Heart Fund or The Salvation Army
