Cody Gonterman

We are deeply saddened to announce that our son and brother, Cody James Gonterman ("Cody G," "CoCo," “Gene”), passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 12, 2026, in Oxford, Alabama.
He is survived by his mother, Lynda Wegrzyn Gonterman; his sister, Emily Gonterman, and her fiancé, Braden Creath; his maternal grandfather, William Wegrzyn Sr. ("Grumps"); his paternal grandparents, John and Diane Gonterman; his aunts and uncles, Laura and Sean Cahill, William Wegrzyn Jr., and Amy and John Milcic; his cousins, Rose (Dominic) Fairman, Alex (Lilibet) Traina, Ryan (Haylee) Traina, Grant Traina, Beaux Wegrzyn, and his favorite Shug dog. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Judy ("Juju") Wegrzyn.
Cody was a 2012 graduate of Staunton High School. After graduating, he moved to Oxford, Alabama, to follow his passion and join his Uncle Bill in the family scrap recycling business.
Cody's favorite things included Cardinals baseball, Alabama and New Orleans Saints football, Widespread Panic shows with his favorite people, fishing with Grumps, and weekends on the water. He loved many things, but nothing meant more to him than time spent with friends and family.
Although he lived on this earth for only 32 years, he packed in more living than most people do in a lifetime. He was giant in stature, but it was his larger-than-life personality that made him truly unforgettable — he was the life of the party. While laughter, jokes, and obnoxious behavior are what most people think of first when they remember Cody, the truth is that he was deeply sensitive and full of love. He maintained friendships from every stage of his life. He was known by many and loved by all.
A celebration of Cody’s short yet beautiful life will be held at a later date. Please find a way to honor Cody by celebrating life every day. In his own words: "Always take the trip, enjoy life, and Roll Tide."
If you’d like to make a donation in Cody’s memory, please consider Nuci’s Space, a non-profit organization supported by his favorite band.
