Clinton “Wayne” Thompson, age 80, of Granite City, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 28, 2025, at his home, surrounded by the love of his devoted wife. Wayne was born on September 30, 1945, in Granite City, a beloved son of the late Ben and Violet Alice (Tucker) Thompson.
Wayne proudly served his country as a United States Marine during the Vietnam War, a chapter of his life marked by extraordinary courage and sacrifice. In recognition of his valor, he was awarded two Purple Hearts and the Navy Cross, honors that reflected his unwavering dedication and bravery in service to others. His commitment to faith was equally strong, as he was a faithful and active member of Covenant Worship Center in Fairview Heights, Illinois.
An avid outdoorsman, Wayne felt most at peace in nature. He had a special talent for cutting down trees, always knowing precisely where they would fall—a skill that reflected both his confidence and deep understanding of the world around him. Above all else, Wayne cherished his family. Time spent with those he loved brought him his greatest joy, and his presence will be deeply missed by all who were blessed to know him.
In addition to his parents, Wayne was preceded in death by his brothers, Jerry, Carl, Donald, and Wesley Thompson, and by his two sons.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Lois Thompson, of Granite City, Illinois; his dear sister, Carmen Williams; and many cherished nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
A celebration of Wayne’s life will be held with visitation from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 2, 2026, at Irwin Chapel in Granite City, Illinois, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Pastors Dave Harrelson and Lonnie Buatte will officiate. Wayne will be laid to rest at Sunset Hill Memorial Estates in Glen Carbon, Illinois, with full military honors conducted by the United States Marines and the Collinsville V.F.W.
