Charles Monahan

Charles "Charlie" E. Monahan, age 70, passed away Sunday, January 18, 2026 at 3:42 am in the ICU at Alton Memorial Hospital surrounded by loved ones.

He was born July 11, 1955 in Plainsville, OH, the son of the late William "Bill" and Eleanor R. (Harris) Monahan. Charlie grew up in LaVale, Maryland and graduated from Beall High School in Allgany County. He then moved to Illinois in 1977 and lived in Godfrey and Moro, IL. Charlie married Pamela Masulla on May 20, 1978, and she survives.

Charlie had worked for Dome Railway Services in Wood River, as well as the GM Wentzville Plant. He also worked at the Clark Oil Refinery until they closed. Charlie also worked at Olin for a time. He was proud to have been the owner and operator of Hole-In-One Indoor Mini Golf, which became Hole-In-One Video (movie rentals), then changing to Monahan's Bar. This was later renamed Monahan's Hollywood Nights in Bethalto, IL.

In addition to his wife of 48 years, Pamela, Charlie is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Amber (Monahan) and Joe Combs of Jerseyville; a son, Christopher "Chris" Monahan of Bethalto, IL; a granddaughter, Maris Ivy Combs of Edwardsville; a brother, Randy Monahan of Boca Raton, FL; a sister and brother-in-law, Darlene (Masulla) and Gary Rowe of East Alton; several nieces and nephews, Randy Lee Monahan of Key West, FL, Michael Rowe, and their daughter, Kinley, of East Alton, IL, Megan Rowe and Jake Flowers and their children, Dexter, Layton, and Lynden "Lenny" of Peoria, IL; and many cousins from Maryland.

Cremation services are being provided by Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
