Charles Kunz

Charles O. Kunz, 90 passed away at Anderson Hospital in Maryville

 He was born on January 16, 1926 in St. Louis, MO, the son of Herman and Elizabeth (Schutt) Kunz.

 Charles married Gloria Lee Merris on September 17, 1955 at Zion Lutheran Church in Bethalto.

He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Bethalto where he was instrumental in starting Zion Lutheran School and was on the school board for many years.  He worked on the annual sausage supper and was a member of the men’s club.

Charles served in the Army during WWII and was a member of Alton VFW Post 1308 in Alton.  After the military he went to the Missouri School of Mines where he received his B.S in Metallurgical Engineering  in Rolla, MO and was a member of Tau Beta PI.

He worked for Olin Corporation where he negotiated foreign contracts for the company, was a member of the East Alton Rotary Club where he received the Paul Harris award.

In addition to his wife, Gloria, he is also survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Kim Kunz of Houston, TX; a daughter, Denise Kunz of Plantation, FL; two granddaughters,  and their spouse, Sara and Jim Bogard of Austin, TX, and Laura and Dustin Gersch of Giddings, TX; two great grandchildren, Oliver and Emerson Bogard; one expectant grandson, Bridger Gersch, a brother and sister-in-law, Willis and Margaret Kunz of Chesterfield, MO; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Grace and Del Starns of Ashland, NE and Dorothy and Vern Cornish of Omaha, NE; two brother-in-laws, Eldon Dieckgraff of Cook, NE and Lee Holcomb of Glen Carbon; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by one sister, Jean Dieckgraff and a sister-in-law, Jean Holcomb.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 pm on Tuesday December 12, 2016 at Elias Kallal Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto, IL.

Visitation will continue from 10 am until time of Funeral Services at 11 am Wednesday December 13, 2016 at Zion Lutheran Church with Pastor Mark Hofferber and Pastor Kale Hanson officiating

Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto where Alton VFW Post 1308 will conduct military rites.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Zion Lutheran School.
