Charles H.. Vandevord, 93, passed away 10:13 pm, Saturday, January 26, 2019 at Eunice Smith Home in Alton.
Born November 22, 1925 in Harco, IL, he was the son of Henry and Hazel (Carpenter) Vandevord.
A World War II navy veteran, he had served on the 'SS Philadelphia'. Charlie had been a general electrician for Laclede Steel for 41 years before retiring.
Charles was a member of the American Legion and Wood River Moose Lodge as well as a proud associate of the "Grandpa Gang" serving the area in various projects.
On April 17, 1948 in Pittson, PA, he married Josephine Rigletic. She died July 9, 2016.
Surviving are a son, Daniel (Susan) Vandevord of Alton; daughters, Linda (Joel) Richards of Lenexa, KS, Nancy (Chris) Lind of Grafton, Julie (Brian) Brenton of Warrensburg, MO; 13 grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren.
His parents and brothers, Daniel and George Vandevord preceded in death.
Visitation will be from 4-8 pm, Wednesday at Marks Mortuary in Wood River.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 am, Thursday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton.
Burial will follow in Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto.
Memorials may be made to St. Mary's Catholic Church.
