Charles Tweedy

Wood River |

Charles E. 'Charlie' Tweedy, 86, passed away 8:40 pm,  Wednesday, September 26, 2018 in Alton Memorial Hospital.

Born in Wood River on September 8, 1932, he was the son of John and Vira 'Jackie' (Bradshaw) Tweedy.

A Korean War navy veteran, serving on the USS Juneau, he co-owned "Charlie's Drive-In" in Wood River and had worked for Standard Oil, a route driver for Taystee Bread and  Mrs. Allison's Cookies, and as an attendant for Marks Mortuary.

Charlie was a 2-time state qualifier in the half-mile for East Alton-Wood River High School; an avid St. Louis Cardinal Baseball fan; and NCAA basketball, especially the Indiana Hoosiers, coached by Bobby Knight.

On September 24, 1956 in Mississippi, he married Carol R. Hanks.  She survives.

Surviving also are two sons, Scott (LeeAnn) Tweedy of Wood River, Tim (Cynthia) Tweedy of Bethalto; two daughters, Rhonda Tweedy (Clyde) Cachero of Moberly, MO, Teresa "Bear" Tweedy of Godfrey; five grandchildren, Amie Meyer, Lauren (Brad) Read, Ashley Tweedy, Brooke Tweedy and Addison Tweedy; great granddaughter, Grace Read; sister, Dolores Kessler of East Alton.

Visitation will be from 1-5 pm Sunday at Marks Mortuary in Wood River where services will be conducted at 10 am, Monday.  Pastors Willard Meyer and Kale Hanson will officiate.

Burial will follow in Woodland Hill Cemetery.
