Charles Buffington

East Alton—Charles “Chuck” Buffington, II, passed away at 2:12 p.m. Thursday, May 4, 2017 at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born Dec. 26, 1968 at Scott Air Force Base, he was a son of Keith and Linda (Schulte) Buffington of Bethalto.

Chuck was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the 1st Cavalry Division, and was stationed at Fort Hood, Texas and Alaska.  He worked for many years as an engineer for Norfolk-Southern Railroad.  He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Bethalto.  He loved collecting old engines and antique farm equipment.

Chuck married Gina Durbin Aug. 13, 1993 in Bethalto.  She survives.

In addition to his wife and parents, he is survived by a daughter, Lani (Kyle) Igel of St. Peters, Mo.; two brothers, Steve (Erin) Buffington of Arizona and Daniel (Christina) Buffington of Collinsville; his grandmother, Lois Schulte of Moro; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Howard Schulte and paternal grandparents Reid and Lula Buffington.

Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, May 9 at Paynic Home for Funerals, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 10.   

Burial will follow at Wanda Cemetery in South Roxana.
