Cecilia Groshans passed away on Thursday, July 5, 2018, only a few days shy of her 98th birthday. She was born in Elsah Township in Illinois to Frank and Anna (Cronin) Wendle on July 13, 1920. On June 5, 1946, Celie married the love of her life, Henry Groshans. They were married 68 years until he preceded her in death on October 25, 2014.Celie, who grew up on a farm, was the oldest girl of nine children. She had a nurturing personality and loved taking care of her baby brothers and sisters. During the war and prior to getting married, she worked as a seamstress. Celie continued to use her creative and artistic abilities throughout her life. She took painting lessons at the Ursuline Convent and volunteered at St. Anthony’s Hospital by arranging silk flowers for them to sell in the gift shop. She also sewed most of her clothes as well as those of her children. Because of her energetic and tireless nature, she was able to pursue these interests while raising her family in a warm and inviting home.Celie, a long time and devoted member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church, will be fondly remembered for her kindness and generosity, her beautiful, hand sewn quilts, the many wedding dresses she made, and her delicious fruit pies.Henry and Cecilia were the proud parents of six children: Patricia (Daniel) Clasby of Godfrey, IL; Marilyn Jean (Edward) Pusczek of St. Charles, MO; Edward (Rhonda) Groshans of Godfrey, IL; Michael (Aimee) Groshans of Tucson, AZ; Brenda (Edward) Manning of Pewaukee, WI; and Vickie (Tyrone) Mitchell of Libertyville, IL. She also leaves behind nineteen grandchildren: Daniel, Ryan, Christopher, and Caroline Clasby, and Julie Osborn; Anne Vines and Ted and Michael Pusczek; John, Andrew, and Matthew Groshans; Patrick, Kristine, Nicholas, and Bryan Manning; and Troy, Niya, Teague, and Cole Mitchell. She also has 14 great-grandchildren.Cecilia was also preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Ollie and Vince Wendle, and sisters Agnes Blair, Louise Tungett, and Betty Stevens. She is survived by her sisters Emily Schroeder and Renie Pohlman, and brother Frank (Bud) Wendle. She was a loving and attentive wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother who will be dearly missed by all her family and friends.Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Monday, July 9, 2018, at Staten-Fine Funeral Home in Alton. A Catholic Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 10, 2018, at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Godfrey with Fr. Steve Janoski officiating.
