Carlene Rice

Carlene Mae Rice, 83, passed away unexpectedly at 10:20 am Saturday February 11, 2017 at home.

She was born on September 1, 1933 in Kampsville, the daughter of the late Carl & Nina (Rosa) Reiss.

Carlene was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Jerseyville. 

She worked many years for the Credit Thrift and American General Finance in Jerseyville.  She was instrumental and an important factor in the opening of Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto in 2002.  She helped in serving families at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Homes and Valhalla Memorial Park Cemetery.  She ran their New Beginnings Support Group and helped with the LIFT Program for widows and widowers. She loved to play bridge, go shopping, reading, collecting quilts, traveling and spending time with her family.

Carlene is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Cindy and Billy Smith of Jerseyville, Nina and Phil Clary of Steeleville, MO;  four grandchildren and spouse, Craig and Nancy Schaaf of Bethalto, Jerusha Smith of Jerseyville, Bobbie and Mike Childs of Jerseyville, and Daniel Kanallakan of Steeleville, MO;  ten great grandchildren, McKenzie, Madison, and Meredith Schaaf, Peyton and Colton Smith, Harper and Annabeth Childs, Star Beth and Tryston Kanallakan, and Lillian Barker; one brother and sister-in-law, William “Bill” and Cynthia Reiss of Colorado. She is also survived by her extended family, Nancy Moore of Chesterfield, MO; her children and spouses, Natalie and Tryston Strickler and Leslie and Christian Lindsey,  their children, Grant, Clark, and Charlotte Strickler and Sam and Charlie Lindsey; Kaye Barnett of Rosewood Heights, Terri Howland of Jerseyville, Kelsey Howland of Grafton and her daughter, Kennadi Howland.

In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death a sister, Jean Miano; by her companion,  Robert “Bob” Moore and his son, Al Moore. 

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 pm Wednesday February 15, 2017 at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville.

Funeral services will be held at 11 am Thursday February 16, 2017 at the First Presbyterian Church in Jerseyville.

Entombment will follow at Valhalla Memorial Park Cemetery in Godfrey 

Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church.

Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto are in charge of arrangements and condolences and guest book.
