Burdette A. Balke

Burdette A. Balke, age 84, died at 8:30 pm, May 4, 2010 at his residence with his family by his side.

He was born on February 19, 1926, in Meppen, IL to Bernard and Elizabeth (Knese) Balke.

Burdette married Rose (Grueter) on June 4, 1947 in Carrollton, IL She survives.

Burdette was a 1949 graduate of St. Louis University with a degree in Business Accounting, he served his country in the Navy during WWII, was employed as Comptroller of the Brass Division of the Olin Corporation in E. Alton, IL for 30 yrs. retiring in 1983. He was formerly a member of St. Matthews Catholic Church in Alton, IL then transferring to St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Godfrey, IL He was a Director at the Olin Credit Union for 40 yrs, a member of the Alton Knights of Columbus, and a long time member of Lockhaven Country Club.

He is survived by his wife, one daughter and her spouse; Fran and Jim Burke of Springfield, IL two sons; Bret Balke of Forsyth, IL and Brian and his spouse Alison Balke of Alton, IL four grandchildren; Megan Burke, Michael Burke, Jordan Balke, and Tyler Balke. Two brothers; Ralph Balke of Alton, IL and Bishop Victor Balke of Moorehead, MN one sister; Ruth and her spouse Ellis Holleman of Jerseyville, IL and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers; Bernard Balke, and Harold Balke.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 pm, Friday May 7, 2010 at the Elias, Kallal & Schaaf Funeral Home in Godfrey IL.

Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 10 am, Saturday May 8, 2010, at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Godfrey, IL with Bishop Victor Balke celebrant.

Burial will be at St. Francis Cemetery in Jerseyville, IL

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to St. Ambrose Education Endowment, or Masses.
