Brock Maggart, 50, of Sullivan, Missouri, died unexpectedly at his home on Thursday, August 20, 2026.
Born in Alton, Illinois, Brock was the son of the late Basil Laverne "Butch" Maggart Sr. and the late Carol Sue Grable. He was only a toddler when he lost his mother. His father later married Sharon Maggart, and together they raised him — she was the woman he always simply called Mom, and she loved him as her own from the start.
Brock had a gift for finding the joke in just about any situation. He loved to give people a hard time, and he loved it even more when they gave it right back. A conversation with Brock rarely stayed serious for long, and that was usually the point.
He took the long way through life. There were restless years and a good many addresses, and Brock would have been the first to admit he gave the family a story or two along the way. But time settled him. In recent years he found a quieter rhythm and a life that suited him — though anyone who knew him knew he was still always up to something.
He never had much, but what he had he shared. If someone needed a hand, Brock was inclined to give it without being asked and without expecting anything back. That generosity, more than anything, is what those who loved him will remember.
His constant companion was his old dog, Tyson, who had Brock's whole heart.
Brock was preceded in death by his father, Basil "Butch" Maggart Sr.; his mother, Carol Sue Grable; and his brother, Basil "Butch" Maggart Jr.
He is survived by his mom, Sharon Maggart of Godfrey, IL; his siblings, Lisa Isom (husband Robert) of Godfrey, IL, Christl Klockenkemper (husband Jim) of Godfrey, IL, Anthony Maggart (wife Jenesa) of Elsah, IL, and Mary Maggart (husband Tom Horstman) of Godfrey, IL; his sister-in-law, Catherine C. Maggart of Camdenton, MO; and a wide circle of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.
Brock will be cremated at his family's request. No public services are planned.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a local animal shelter in Brock's memory — a kindness he would have appreciated.
