Bonnie Ruth Heriford Miller, 96, formerly of Jerseyville passed away Monday, June 6, 2016 at Heritage Manor in Beardstown, IL. She was born July 3, 1919 at the family home in Scottville, Illinois to Franklin Guy Fuel Heriford and Vela (Cherry) Heriford. She married Vernon R. Miller on December 24, 1945. Following her marriage to Vernon, the couple resided in Wood River, IL before moving to Jerseyville, IL in 1949.
Bonnie attended grade school and high school in Scottville. After high school she went to work for the Close Telephone Co. as a switchboard operator for two years. She was then employed at the Macoupin County Courthouse in Carlinville, IL where she worked on tax extensions. In 1942, Bonnie went to work for the Western Cartridge Co. in the cost accounting department.
In 1947, Bonnie and Vernon sold their share of the Griffith and Miller Wholesale Fruit and Produce partnership and opened the Jersey War Surplus Store. In 1949, they moved the business to 102 S. State Street in Jerseyville and changed the name to Millers’ Department Store, retiring on January 2, 1982.
Bonnie was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Jerseyville. She was an avid golfer and member of the Westlake Country Club.
Bonnie is survived by her nephews: David Heriford (Companion Tonie Beard Culves) of Rushville, IL; and John Heriford (wife Brenda Miller Heriford) of Bath, IL.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, one brother: Jack Heriford, and one sister: Virginia Heriford, who died in infancy.
