Bill M. Cowan, 81, passed away at 6:20 am Saturday, May 14, 2011 at Kindred Hospital in St. Louis.
He was born on August 21, 1929 in Alton, the son of Joe & Lillian (Leitze) Cowan.
He married Helen Lee Anderson on September 25, 1954 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Alton and she preceded him in death on November 26, 2001.
He was a US Navy Veteran and a member of Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Alton. He worked for Laclede Steel Company as a Millwright and retired in 1991.
He is survived by eight children and spouses, William & Jeannie Cowan of Alton, Timothy & Conya Cowan of Elsah, Julie & Matt Hinrichs of Jerseyville, Michael Cowan of Godfrey, John & Stephanie Cowan of DeKalb, Sarah & Ron Henkhaus of Benton, MO, Mary & Shannon Destrampe of Pinckney, Michigan and Martha & Joe White of Alton; twenty three grandchildren, Joel, Matt, Ben, TJ, and Jane Cowan, Lauren Horn, Andrew, Catherine, and Olivia Hinrichs, Elizabeth & Cody Cowan, Emily, Mary, Alex, Kyle, Madeline, and Caroline Henkhaus, Nick & Claire Destrampe, Molly Cowan, Noah, Parker and Cooper White, and beloved pet, Buster Cowan; five great-grandchildren, Jackson Hinrichs, Julianna Horn, Stella, Jude and Marley Cowan; and one brother, Fred Cowan.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Lilly Ann White; one brother, Joe Cowan Jr. and one sister, Betty Guccione.
Per his wishes cremation rites were accorded.
Visitation will be from 9 am until time of memorial Mass be held at 10 am Saturday May 21, 2011 at Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Alton with Fr. Peter Donohoe SSL celebrant.
Inurnment will follow at Valhalla Memorial Park Cemetery in Godfrey.
Memorials may be made to 5A’s.
