Betty J. "Tootsie" Turner, 83, passed away Friday, December 15, 2023 at Liberty Village in Maryville.
Born November 10, 1940 in McKinnon, TN, she was the daughter of Walter Riley and Mary Edna (Watkins) Mathis.
On May 1, 1959 in Alton, she married Marvin Turner. He died October 11, 2019.
"Tootsie" was sassy and kind, could bake like crazy, loved babies and her own dog, "Roxy". She wasn't one to stay inside watching TV, you could find her outdoors playing in her flowers, mowing or going for walks. She was a homemaker and babysitter for as long as can be remembered and many of those kids were raised with her own children. She never treated one better than the other and to this date, they remain close and in touch with one another. She loved her grandchildren and great grandchildren even more.
Surviving are a son, Gary (Malinda) Turner of Wood River; daughter, Patricia Bryant of Hartford; seven grandchildren, Allison Staicoff, Katelyn McCracken, Kyler Turner, Joshua Turner, Allen Turner, Briana Bryant, Keely Yoiunger; 12 great grandchildren, Hunter, Sophia, Clark, Porter, Thea, Violet, Waylon, Hank, Melody, Hudson, Aurora and Chloe; a brother, Larry (Brenda) Mathis of Hettick; a niece, Heather Groetecke, whom she raised; and numerous other nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a son, David Turner; two brothers, Pete Mathis and Charles Mathis; and five sisters, Linda Mathis, Ruby Mathis, Ida Shafer, Martha Howard and Mae Myer.
Visitation will be from 10 am until time of service at 12 pm, Thursday, December 21 at Marks Mortuary in Wood River. Pastor Roy Boyer will officiate.
Burial will follow in Wanda Cemetery in South Roxana.
