Betty M. Horney, 77, died at 1:25 a.m. Wednesday, November 18, 2009 at her home in Godfrey. Born January 14, 1932 in Alton, she was the daughter of Clarence and Nettie (King) Schmitt. She worked for Peavy Mill, WOKZ, and Alton Memorial Hospital before working for the Alton School District where she retired from in 1996. She was a member of the Alton-Wood River Sportsman's Club Ladies Auxiliary, the Madison County Retired Secretaries Association, and attended St. Mary's Catholic Church. She volunteered at the Caravan Resale Shop in Alton and the Hadley House District Office in the Edwardsville School District. She loved to spend time with family, read, travel, volunteer, and play with her dachshunds, Chloe and Morgan. On October 17, 1954 in Alton, she married Donald Horney. He survives. Also surviving are two daughters; Donna Cain and her husband Keith of Alton, and LeAnn Springman of St. Joseph, Michigan, two brothers; William Schmitt and his wife Helen of Godfrey, and Ronald Schmitt and his wife Rosie of Urbana, IL, and a sister-in-law, Gerry Schmitt of Godfrey. She was preceded in death by her parents, and a brother, James Schmitt. Visitation and funeral for family and close friends will be from 10:00 a.m. until time of funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Monday at Gent Funeral Home in Alton. Father Shawn Monahan will officiate. Burial will be at Upper Alton Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the 5A's Humane Society, 4530 N. Alby Road, Godfrey, IL 62035.
