Betty Jean Sova Shelton went to be with the Lord on Monday, December 07, 2009, at the Gibson Hospital Annex in Gibson City, IL. Betty was born in Collinsville on June 25, 1925, to Matthew and Mary Irene (Yount) Sova. She married Joseph R. Shelton on March 18, 1944. He predeceased her on August 30, 1986.

She was a long-time resident of Godfrey where she was a mother, homemaker, and a licensed lay speaker in the United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Godfrey United Methodist Church.

She is survived by five children, Bill (Cynthia) Shelton of Olney, Barbara Shafer of Ft. Leonard Wood, MO, Kathy Myron of Boynton Beach, FL, Robert (Sandy) of Gibson City, and John (Vicki) of Camdenton, MO, two brothers, Orville Sova, Collinsville, Robert, Mt. Vernon, and one sister, Mary Louise Lankford of Wood River. Surviving grandchildren include: Cory, Patrick, Joseph, John, and Kevin Shelton, Amy (Jeffrey) Shoemaker, Nikki (Robert) Pilger, Megan (Mike) Clemens, and Kristin (Bruce) Moudy, Jason Carman, Jesse (Faith) Carman. Great-grandchildren include Raymond, Jacob, Courtney, and Kendra Moudy, Mackenzie, Quinton, Emmit, and Collin Pilger, Maddox and Emily Clemens, and Caden, Elaine, and Ronin Carman, Coby, Cayden, and Hope Shelton, and Samantha and Tucker Shoemaker. Betty was preceded in heaven by her parents, Matthew and Mary Irene Sova, husband Joseph Shelton, and great-grandson Dalton Moudy.

Visitation will be from 12:00 noon until time of funeral service at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday at Gent Funeral Home in Alton. Burial will be at Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey. Reverend Don E. Long Jr. will officiate.
