Betty Jean Buehrer, 94, of Hartford and formerly of Granite City, Illinois passed away at 10:15 p.m. on Thursday, September 15, 2016 at Villa Rose in Bethalto.
She was born April 19, 1922 in Plymouth, Indiana, a daughter of the late Ervin and Helen (Thomas) Schaefer. She married Julius John Buehrer on November 6, 1947 at St. John United Church of Christ in Granite City and he passed away on October 3, 2005. She retired in 1987 from Southwestern Bell after 17 years of service as an information operator. She was a former member and had enjoyed attending the former Son-Life Church in Collinsville. She was always sharing love and ministering to others throughout her life. She was a dedicated and faithful homemaker, always tending to her family and home. She enjoyed her days of helping on the farm, canning, cooking and cherished her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a member of the Women’s Christian Fellowship and a supporter of the Phoenix Crisis Center. Betty will be remembered for the love and special times shared with her family and friends.
She is survived by a son, Edward L. Buehrer and his wife, Marcene R. Buehrer of Hartford; a daughter, Marie L. Odom-Green of Granite City and her special friend, William Metheny of Alton; four grandchildren and their spouses, Shane and Jennifer Buehrer, Kyle and Tamie Buehrer, Kristen and Josh Levi and Jennifer and Scotty Tomlanovich; four great grandchildren, Autumn Buehrer, Austin Buehrer, Vincent Verbais, Davis Verbais and Ryder Levi; four brothers and three sisters-in-law, Leonard Schaefer of Granite City, Oliver and Marilyn Schaefer of Greenville, Leroy and Diana Schaefer of Granite City and William “Bill” and Margo Schaefer of Highland; one sister, Leona Stines of Texas; many nieces; nephews; other extended family and friends. In addition to her beloved husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a precious granddaughter, Michelle Odom and a brother, Walter Schaefer.
In celebration of her life, visitation will be at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City on Tuesday, September 20, 2016 from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue on Wednesday, September 21, 2016 from 9:00 a.m. until time of funeral service at 10:00 a.m. with Reverend Louis Ramsey officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Hill Memorial Estates in Glen Carbon.
