Betty Luly

Betty J. Luly, age 86, of Godfrey, passed away Tuesday, May 29, 2018, at Alton Memorial Hospital.She was born December 13, 1931, the daughter of Daniel and Minnie (Larson) Higgins. She married Henry Earl Luly on July 1, 1951 in Wood River, and he preceded her in death.Betty worked her entire life as a secretary and bookkeeper. She had worked in the Alton School system, at Alton Memorial Hospital, as well as several local businesses. Betty then worked as a Pastor’s secretary at Liberty Christian Center, followed by employment at Hillcrest Apartments until her late 70’s.Betty enjoyed reading British mystery novels and loved sitting on her porch enjoying nature. She was proud to belong to a circle of friends for forty-seven years that called themselves “The Four Goddesses.” Her greatest joy was her two granddaughters.She is survived by two children and their spouses, Carol “Keri” Luly and J. Stanley Black of Godfrey, and Brian and Sheryl Luly of Brighton; two sisters, Jean Marshal and Fern Smith; two granddaughters, Rachel Kessinger (Nick) and Grace Luly; and many other relatives and friends.In addition to her husband, Henry; she is preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Lela Varble and Marie Sepo; and a brother, Daniel “Boone” Higgins Jr.Visitation will be held Friday, June 1, 2018, from 9:00 am until the time of service at 10:00 am at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Godfrey with Pastor Nick Kessinger officiating.Burial will take place in Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey.In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Oasis Women’s Center or to BJC Hospice.Condolences may be found online at Elias, Kallal & Schaaf Funeral Home
