Betty Ann Duggan, 86, died peacefully at 8:59 AM Friday, August 28, 2026, at her residence under the care of her family.
She was born in Fieldon on June 25, 1940, one of two children born to Theodore and Gladys Stemmler, and was a graduate of Jersey Community High School.
She married John F. Duggan on April 19, 1958, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Fieldon, and together they built a beautiful life that spanned 58 wonderful years prior to his death on June 25, 2016.
She was an admired bus driver for 25 years for the Jersey School District, receiving a commendation for her quick reaction to avoid a very serious accident. Her love of Fieldon and its people was the driving force behind her 40 years of service as Mayor. Her greatest accomplishments while serving Fieldon were the construction of the water tower, the establishment of the Bank of Calhoun, and the purchase of the Fieldon Elementary School by the church. Her greatest joy was Fieldon’s Independence Day Celebration. At the age of 74, she continued to serve the people of Fieldon by opening and operating Betty’s Get-N-Go, where customers became friends. It was her strong faith in Jesus that inspired her love of family, friends, and community.
Surviving are her four children and their spouses: Darlene and Richard Schannot of Godfrey, John W. and Tammy Duggan of Fieldon, Connie and Jeff Blackorby of Jerseyville, and Sharon and Jim Lumma of Godfrey; nine grandchildren and their spouses: Barbie and Kevin McCormick of Dow, Dean and Sarah Schannot of Jerseyville, John and Lindsey Duggan of Fieldon, Liz Duggan, and Chrisy and Chris McElya, all of Jerseyville, Beau Blackorby of Jerseyville, Britt and Bryan Tyler of St. Louis, and Tyler Lumma and Marcus Lumma of Godfrey; fifteen great-grandchildren: Aubrey, Libby, and Emma McCormick; Hudson and Bentley Schannot; Bayley and Cami Duggan; Ezra, Gabriel, Adam, Stephen, Eden, James, and Grace McElyea; and Blaze Tyler.
In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her husband and her brother, Donald Stemmler.
Visitation will be from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM Wednesday at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:00 AM Thursday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Fieldon with Father Martin Smith officiating.
Burial will be in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Fieldon.
Memorials may be given to the St. Francis/Holy Ghost School in Jerseyville.
