She was born on August 2, 1918 in East St. Louis, Illinois, the daughter of Hardy & Ruby (McWhorter) Stone.
Bernice married Lucian Asaro April 4, 1934 at St Mary' Catholic Church in Alton with Monsignor J.J. Brunie officiating. Lucian passed away April 9, 1998 after a lengthy illness.
She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton; she retired from Owens Illinois Glass Company in 1977 after 40 years of service as warehouse inspector; she was a member of Alton VFW Post Auxiliary; St Anthony's Auxiliary; and worked the political elections for several years.
Surviving are one son, Lucian "Joe" Asaro Jr., and one grandson, Andrew Asaro; both of Las Vegas, NV. She will be deeply missed by her granddaughter, Tisha (Leroy) Rhine of Alton and great grandchildren, Alexia and Jeremy Rhine. She leaves behind one daughter-in-law, Sherry (Terry) Lyon of Alton and several nieces & nephews; and many good friends and neighbors.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by three siblings, Buddy, Donald and Joanne; three sisters-in-law, Mary Malone, Kay Rambo, and Rose Hale a brother-in-law, Roger Hale, and a dear cousin, Eileen McWhorter.
In celebration of her life, visitation will be from 5 to 7 pm Wednesday January 27, 2010 at Staten-Fine Funeral Home in Alton.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 am Thursday January 28, 2010 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton.
Burial will follow at Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey.
Memorials may be made to the BJC Hospice or St. Mary's Catholic Church.
