Barbara J. Bitter, 80, died at 4:10 p.m. Thursday, November 22, 2012 at St. Anthony’s Health Center. Born in Litchfield on September 19, 1932 she was the daughter of the late John L. and Helen (Long) Bitter. Barb attended Knox College and Brown’s Business School before accepting a job in Litchfield with Prudential Insurance Company. She later was transferred to Springfield and eventually to Alton where she retired after over 40 years of service. She was a member of Main St. United Methodist Church in Alton where she was active on numerous committees over the years. Barb was a past board member of the Oasis Women’s Center in Alton and a long- time volunteer with the Caravan Resale Shop.
Surviving are her sister; Betty Lewis of Belleville, IL, four nieces and nephews; Francis Benard (Ed) of Brisbane, Australia, John Lewis (Nancy) of Chandler, AZ, Mark Lewis (Jeannie) of East Moline, IL and Sara Klappert (Rainer) of Marienhagen, Germany, eight great nieces and nephews; Annemarie Bartels (Heinrich), Sharon Benard, William Benard (Alexis), Anton Benard (Liz), John A. Lewis (Suzanne), Stephanie Mayhead (Darren), Michelle Young (Michael) , Ariana Klappert, and her best friend; Marlene Toppe of Alton. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until time of memorial service at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 18, 2012 at Main Street United Methodist Church in Alton. Burial will be at Elmwood Cemetery in Litchfield.
