Hartford |

Arthur W. Hanfelder, 92, born in Hartford, IL to William C. and Josephine C. (Gascho) Hanfelder on Sept. 11, 1924, passed away at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, January 25, 2017 at VIP/Integrity Healthcare of Wood River.

Arthur (known as Art), was the second child of 13.  In his early adult life he was engaged in farming and enjoyed operating and maintaining his J.I. Case farm equipment.  In later years, Art enjoyed his work in sales, during which time he became acquainted with many people who enjoyed his many stories and wonderful sense of humor.  Over the years, Art became a masterful gardener, always planting various and unusual vegetables, which he enjoyed sharing with friends and relatives.  To help in this effort, friends would bring leaves to Art by the bagsfull for mulch and compost, although he also would visit friends and neighbors to collect, as he said, “to ease their burden”.

Art was the father of four daughters, Cynthia (Tom) Grange of Edwardsville, Sandra (Robert) Turk of Granite City, Melinda Jones of Brighton, and Candie Hanfelder of Edwardsville; and one son, Frank Hanfelder of Dorsey and his longtime companion, Debbie Fisher.

On Oct. 10, 1988, Art married Shirley Voss and she survives.  Art and Shirley owned and operated the Bethalto Inn from 1989-1995, where they met and enjoyed many good friends and patrons.

Also surviving are Art’s stepchildren, Debbie (Kenny) Ragan, Steve (Tracey) Seymour, Amy (Mark) Fair, and David (Sandra) Seymour; 15 grandchildren, 12 step grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren; siblings Alice Schuessler of Springfield, Mo., Charles (Sonja) Hanfelder of East Alton, Rita (James) Sutton of South Roxana, Margaret Hinkle of Alhambra, Joseph Hanfelder of Bethalto, Gladys (Eugene) Abernathy of East Alton, and Phyllis (Robert) Noble of Wood River; a sister-in-law, Betty Hanfelder and a brother-in-law, Jim Stille.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers and sisters Kenneth Hanfelder, Robert Hanfelder, Helen Perry, Doris Stille and Kathryn Smith.

Visitation will be 2-6 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 29 at Paynic Home for Funerals, where Pastor Mike Southcombe will officiate services at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 30.

Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto.

Memorials may be made to St. John’s United Church of Christ in Wood River.
