Arthur Harris

Arthur Harris, 85, passed away Friday 7:30 pm February 26, 2010 at Jerseyville Nursing Home and Rehab Center in Jerseyville.

He was born on April 18, 1924 in Jersey County the son of Robert and Fay (Vickroy) Harris.

He married Wanda Laray (Becker) Bennett on May 29, 1967 in Alton. She survives.

He was a machine operator for Owens Illinois Glass Company for 41 years. He served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII in Europe when he was wounded. He was very active with Camp Hugh in Bunker Hill, IL and working in his church Friendship General Baptist Church in East Alton. Arthur loved fishing, deer hunting and traveling in his RV throughout the country.

In addition to his wife, he is also survived by four children and their spouses Arthur and Cynthia Harris of Fieldon, Terry and Pamela Harris of Brighton, Kevan and Marsha Bennett of Alton, Randy and Brenda Bennett of Amarillo, TX, fourteen grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren, two sisters Bessie "Betty" Huber of Bethalto and Freda Frye of Wood River.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by one grandson David Bennett, four sisters Verna McNealy, Alice Miller, Stella Dunsford and Mae "Eileen" Powell.

In celebration of his life, visitation will be from 4 to 8 pm Tuesday March 2, 2010 at Elias Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Godfrey. Services will be at the Friendship General Baptist Church in East Alton at 10:00 am Wednesday March 3, 2010 with Rev. Joe Fletcher officiating.

Burial will follow at Bethany Cemetery in Dow, IL

Memorials may be made to Parkinson's Disease Foundation or Friendship General Baptist Church.
