Arlus Day

JERSEYVILLE – Arlus Monroe Day, 86, died Thursday, June 8, 2017 at Des Peres Hospital in St. Louis, MO. 

He was born on August 3, 1930 in Hartshorn, MO, one of five children born to the late Harry and Virgie (Crabtree) Day. 

Arlus grew up in Hartshorn and began at an early age working alongside his Father as a logger. He then relocated to Illinois, at which time he gained employment at Walter Stave Mill in Jerseyville and worked various jobs for a period of time before settling with Whiteway Sanitation Services where he dedicated over 30 years as a Sanitation Engineer, retiring in 1995. 

He married the former Annie Alberta Elizabeth Teney on May 13, 1950 in Jerseyville and together their marriage was blessed with six children and together they had recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary before her death on May 21, 2000. 

Arlus was a lover of country and western music  and cherished the time he spent with his family – whether it was taking drives along the River Road or sitting on his front porch watching nature. Whether you knew him by his given name, or as “Sleepy” or “Tinker”, you had a true friend in Arlus Day. 

Surviving are three daughters, Bonnie Wells and her companion, Dennis Smith; Joyce Hill; and Barbara and Larry Eden, all of Kane; three sons, Fred Day of Holly Hills, FL; Dale Day, and his companion, Angela Powers and Curt Day, all of Jerseyville; as well as numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and extended family members. 

In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Annie Wells; two grandsons, William Wells Jr. and Michael Eden; two sisters, Margret Grogan and Ethel Lamborn; as well as two brothers, Amos and Andrew Day. 

Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until time of funeral services at 1 p.m., Wednesday at the Crawford Funeral Home with family friend and longtime neighbor, Chester Keene officiating. 

Burial will take place at the Brighton City Cemetery in Brighton. 

In lieu of flowers and plants, memorials may be given to Shriner’s Hospital or to the Ronald McDonald House, in care of the funeral home. 

Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville is in charge of arrangements.
