Antigone Simpson

Antigone “Andy” Kodros Simpson passed away peacefully Sunday evening, June 26, 2016 at Godfrey Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Godfrey, IL.

Born on January 31, 1924, Andy was the daughter of John and Irene (Pantages) Kodros of Andros, Greece.

She was the youngest of 7 children, with 3 brothers and 3 sisters. She was educated in the Alton schools and attended Shurtleff College, majoring in Business. Andy had a beautiful smile that could light up a room. She greeted everyone she met with a warm hug and a kind word. Her love of Alton was demonstrated by the many volunteer hours she dedicated to various community organizations. She was a member of the White Cross Auxiliary of Alton Memorial Hospital and a Gift Shop volunteer for 40 years, St. Anthony’s Hospital volunteer, Salvation Army Advisory Board and Bell Ringer, Alton Community Service League, Lewis and Clark Community College Statue Commission Board, Community representative of Alton Little Theater, Alton Park and Recreation Tennis Committee, Usher and Greeter at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, past Treasurer or Alton Dance Club and former President of the Madison County Medical Auxiliary. Andy was honored to be a YWCA Woman of Distinction and a Riverbend Head Start Circle of Care Award recipient with her late sister, Anna Beach. Andy and Anna were also Grand Marshalls of the Alton Memorial Day Parade. She received the Community Builder’s Award from the Franklin Masonic Lodge and the Kimmel Community Service Award from SIUE. She was inducted into the Alton High School Hall of Fame for her loyal support of Alton High athletics, especially tennis and basketball.

On April 19, 1947, Andy married Raymond “Bud” Simpson in Dallas, TX. He preceded her in death on June 12, 1982.

Andy’s love of tennis began when she fell in love with Bud. She was honored when Lewis and Clark Community College named their tennis facility the “Andy Simpson Tennis Complex” for her many volunteer hours and financial support. Area tennis players knew that Andy would always be there to cheer them on and bring them bananas and Pay Day candy bars for nourishment. She also shared her delicious baklava with many lucky members of the community.

Surviving are her daughter-in-law, Nancy Simpson of Alton; granddaughter, Kate Simpson of Venice, CA; grandson, Rob Simpson of Denver, CO.

Along with her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by her son, Dr. Robert Simpson; three brothers, Gus, Bill and Archie Kodros; three sisters, Mary Malone, Diamond Stavros and Anna Beach.

Visitation will be from 9:00-11:00 a.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church on Saturday, July 2, 2016. A memorial service will follow. Interment will follow at Alton City Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Simpson Memorial Tennis Fund, www.simpsontennis.org to support the tennis community that Andy so loved. Memorials may also be made to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.
