Alice Mendenhall

Alice R. Mendenhall, 97, passed away at 4:31 pm on Thursday, March 9, 2017 at her home surrounded by her family.

She was born on July 12, 1919 in Chicago, the daughter of the late Guy W. and Mary (Jeffries) Reid.

She married John H. Mendenhall Sr. on June 20, 1942 in Chicago. He preceded her in death on November 16, 2009.

Alice attended the University of Illinois where she met her husband, John. She taught at St. Ambrose Elementary School for 15 years before retiring. Alice was a member of the Community Congregational UCC in Godfrey for many years and then transferred membership to Evangelical UCC in Godfrey where she sang with her husband in the choir. She and her husband volunteered at Crisis Food Center, they also traveled extensively. She was a loyal Cubs fan, a wonderful grandmother and great grandmother.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara & Jack Wepler of Pittsburgh, PA; two sons and daughters-in-law, Doug & Stephanie Mendenhall of Alton and John & Susan Mendenhall of Bloomington, IL; seven grandchildren, Travis and Todd Zimmerman, Jeremy & Samantha Wepler, Jessica and Christopher Mendenhall and Jacob and Alex Levering; two great grandchildren, Tristan Zimmerman and  Maxton John Zimmerman.

In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her siblings, a son, Thomas J. Mendenhall and her husband, J. Howard.

Visitation will be on Monday, March 13, 2017 from 4:30 pm until the time of service at 6:30 pm at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Godfrey with Rev. Jerry MeCaskey officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to:  Crisis Food Center or 5 A’s Animal Shelter.
