Robert Long

Robert C. Long, 84, passed away at 1:45 am Tuesday October 15, 2013, at the Eunice Smith Nursing Home in Alton, IL.

 

He was born on November 17, 1928, the son of the Late Leonard and Florence (Penning) Long.

He earned his BS from Shurtleff College in Alton and MA from Washington University in St. Louis. He began his education career in Shipman teaching math and science from 1951-1954, then spent 30 years with the Alton School District during which he taught science and served as assistant principal at West Junior High, was a counselor at Central Junior High and spent thirteen years as a counselor at Alton High School. After retiring, he was an avid farmer and gardener on his Wooded Acres Farm where he maintained lush beds of day lilies and peonies. He was active in the Alton community through his memberships in the Franklin Masonic Lodge, Sierra Club, Illinois Retired Teacher Association and Upper Alton Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his twin brother Donald A. Long, an older brother Art Long and “Aunt” Fannie Ackerman. Uncle Bob is lovingly remembered by his surviving family members that include Ruth C. Long, sister-in-law, two nieces and their husbands Judy and Steve Schlobohm (Georgetown, TX) and Barbara and Richard Kennedy (Chicago, IL), five grand-nieces and nephews: Matt and Pri Schlobohm (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), Rebecca and Ron Pruse (Peoria, IL), John Schlobohm (Tiwi, Australia), Patrick and Laura Kennedy (Hot Springs, AR), and Megan Kennedy and Richie Owings (Brookline, MA), and a great-grandnephew James Pruse and great-grandniece Eva Kennedy. The family would also like to acknowledge the family of Bill and Margie Levi for providing years of care and friendship.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 pm, Thursday, October 17, 2013 at Elias, Kallal & Schaaf Funeral Home in Alton, IL. 

Masonic Rites will be conducted at 6:30 Thursday, October 17, 2013 by the Franklin Lodge #25 AF and AM.

Funeral Service will be at 10 am, on Friday, October 18, 2013 at the Upper Alton Baptist Church in Alton, with Rev. Brad Donoho officiating.

Burial will be at the Upper Alton Cemetery in Alton, IL.

Memorials may be directed to Senior Services Plus Meals on Wheels or the Upper Alton Baptist Church.
