Eugene “Bud” H. Suessen, 91, passed away at 7:29 pm Tuesday, February 5, 2013 at Rosewood Care Center in Alton.
He was born on January 31, 1922 in Bethalto, IL, the son of the late George and Matilda (Homm) Suessen.
He married Gloria A. Neubauer on January 13, 1952 at Zion Lutheran Church in Bethalto. She survives.
Eugene was a postal supervisor for the East Alton Post Office for over 20 years, retiring in 1987. He also farmed the land on which he lived since the age of 2. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, serving as the Sunday School department treasurer for 39 years. He enjoyed bowling and was a long time member of the LLL Bowling League. He also enjoyed square dancing, watching the St. Louis Cardinals and spending time with his family and friends, especially his grandchildren and great granddaughter.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Trella Helmkamp of Bethalto and Teresa Suessen of Glen Carbon; three grandchildren, Sara and her husband, Ray Bozarth, Kate Helmkamp and Abbi Helmkamp; a great granddaughter, Annabelle Bozarth; a sister-in-law, Ruth Stewart of Bethalto and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Leona Paust, a brother, Wilford Suessen and a son-in-law, Dave Helmkamp.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 pm Friday, February 8, 2013 at Elias, Kallal & Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 am Saturday, February 9, 2013 at Zion Lutheran Church in Bethalto with Pastor Mark Hofferber and Pastor Willard Meyer officiating.
Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto.
Memorials may be given to Zion Lutheran School.
