Dorothy “Dottie” A. Hartzell, 80, went to be with the Lord, at 11:25 pm Monday, February 20, 2012, at her residence.
She was born on November 13, 1931 in Alton, IL, the daughter of the late Walter “Bill” Jacob & Edna C. (Lenggenhager Theisen) Bensman.
She married James V. Hartzell on February 11, 1961 in Alton at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. He passed away on November 7, 1992.
Dottie was employed at Pevely Flour Mill, St. Joseph Hospital as a Unit Clerk, took care of many children in her home and Williams Office Products as an office clerk, where she worked for 10 years. She was a past member of St. Matthews Catholic Church in Alton and a member of St. Ambrose Catholic in Godfrey. She enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren.
Dottie is survived by her two daughters and sons-in-law, Pam & Aaron Paul Cunningham of Carrollton and Beth and Colin Gast of Arnold, MO; seven grandchildren, Lauren and Rachel Cunningham, Emily, Allison, Daniel and Stephen Hartzell and Kyle Gast; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Dolores & Earl Pace of TX and Eileen & John Budde of Godfrey; one sister-in-law, Vonnetha Webb of NJ and many nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Ross E. Hartzell; six brothers, Walter, Eugene, Paul, Gerald, John and Donald Bensman and one sister, Roberta Miller.
A Celebration of her life will be from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Thursday, February 23, 2012 at Staten-Fine Funeral Home in Alton.
A funeral Mass will be at 10:30 am on Friday, February 24, 2012 at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Godfrey with Fr. Steve Pohlman officiating.
Burial will be at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Alton.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society and or Shriner’s Children’s Hospital.
