Donald "Gene" Johnson, 71, died at 6:33 a.m. Monday, June 14, 2010 at Alton Memorial Hospital.

Born June 15, 1938 in Calhoun County, IL, he was the son of Elmer and Edna (Shaw) Johnson. He retired from the wire mill at Laclede Steel Company and was a member of the Alton Moose Club.

On January 18, 1957 in Hardin, he married the former Dorothy Sanders. She survives. Also surviving is a daughter, Tammy Gardner and her husband Steve of Naples, FL, two sons, Mike Johnson and his wife Susan of Brighton and Scott Johnson and his wife Christy of Brighton, five grandchildren, Lindsey Gardner of Naples, FL, Brock Johnson of Brighton, Kelsey Gardner of Naples, FL, Bianca Johnson of Brighton and Brian Johnson of Brighton, one brother, Elmer Johnson Jr. and his wife Verna of Brighton, one sister, Kathy Mindrup and her husband Bruce of Jerseyville and a brother-in-law, Terry Hurley. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Melvin and Ray Johnson and a sister, Norma Hurley.

Visitation will be from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Wednesday at Gent Funeral Home in Alton where funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. Thursday. Reverend David Prosser will officiate. Burial will be at Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey.

Memorials may be made to the Word and Spirit Family Church or the American Cancer Society.
