James Reed "Robbie" Roberson, 82, passed away at 5:40 p.m. Friday, June 11, 2010 at Select Specialty Hospital in St. Charles.
Born Jan. 9, 1938 in Enid, Okla., he was a son of Dossie and Jocie (Cates) Roberson.
He married Doris M. Armstrong Aug. 2, 1947. They enjoyed almost 52 years of marriage before she passed away March 12, 1999.
Robbie retired from Laclede Steel after 33 years. Prior to that, he worked at Nugent-Shapanski Orchard in Grafton, and for a time he bought and sold logs. It was said he could pick out the very best tree and drop it anywhere he wanted. He also was a volunteer firefighter for Bethalto for over 30 years. A very dedicated family man, he was an adopted grandfather to many people over the years. He was an exceptional bowler, splitting several pins into pieces over the years. In his early years, he loved fishing and hunting, and later his passion was dealing in antiques. He worked in the Union Label Booth for many years, was a baseball coach, and an honorary Jaycee.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Tab and Kelly Roberson and a daughter and son-in-law, Tina and Randy Baugher, all of Bethalto; 6 grandchildren, Ty and Christy Roberson, Tara and Brian Brooks, Toby Roberson and Laura Gentry, Trista and Brian Liedtke, and Tab Roberson, Jr., all of Bethalto and Tim Roberson and Oscar Robbins of Springfield; and 3 great grandchildren, Trinity, Taylor, and Trenton.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Terry Roberson; three brothers; and two sisters.
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Sunday, June 13 at Paynic Home for Funerals in Rosewood Heights, where Pastor Mark Hofferber will officiate services at 10 a.m. Monday, June 14.
Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto.
Memorials may be given to the 5 A’s animal shelter.
