Lyle Ganter

80-year-old Lyle Nelson Ganter of Brighton, IL died early Saturday morning, May 15th , 2010, at Rosewood Care Center.

He was born in Hurst, IL on the 4th of July, 1929 to Joseph P. and Nellie (Harrison) Ganter. He married June Carolyn Maher on November 21, 1953 at Sts. Peter and Paul Church in Alton. They made their home in Alton, and together raised 11 children.

He was a 1947 graduate of Alton High School, and earned a degree in Psychology from S.I.U.E. He served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of the Korean conflict. As a young man, he worked as a butcher at Luer Brothers Packing in Alton. He was retired from Lewis & Clark Community College, where he worked as a Maintenance Supervisor. He loved listening to jazz, watching golf and tennis, and telling jokes and stories. He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, June, in 2008; two brothers, William and Victor; two sons, Joseph Paul and David Lyle; and a daughter, Carolyn Marie.

Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Ann and Brian Landreth of Godfrey and Molly and Mike Price of Brighton. Six sons survive – his devoted son and care-taker, James Ganter of Brighton; William Ganter of Alton; John Ganter of Howell, MI; Andrew and Nanette Ganter of Granite City; Charles and Angela Ganter of Commerce City, CO; and Christopher Ganter of Jerseyville; thirteen grandchildren, Roger Landreth of Godfrey; Christopher Price of Patuxent River, MD; David Price of Washington, DC; Hannah Price of Brighton; Derek Ganter of Alton; Schuyler and Logan Ganter of Michigan; Lucas, Marcus, Nicholas, and Landon Ganter of Colorado; Noah Baker of Alton; Angela Ganter of St. Louis; a great-granddaughter, Oliva Price; and two daughters-in-law, Susan Ganter and Melody Ganter of Alton.

According to his wishes, his remains were donated to Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. Targhetta & Wooldridge Funeral Home in Brighton is handling the arrangements. A memorial mass will be held at St. Alphonsus Church on Main Street in Brighton, IL at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 19th. Memorials may be made to the Brighton Memorial Library, P. O. Box 183, Brighton IL 62012, or to St. Alphonsus Church in Brighton.
