Royal C. Marsh, 94, died at 11:10 a.m. on Friday, May 7, 2010 at Saint Anthony’s Health Center. He was born January 3, 1916 in Berwyn, Illinois the son of the late Royal Conklin and Alice ( Lethbridge) Marsh Sr.
A graduate of Ohio State University with a degree in Ornamental Horticulture. He served 4 years in the Army Air Force based at Scott Field, Il and Langley Field, VA. In 1946 he moved to Godfrey and worked for Shell Oil Company, later he taught science in the Alton school system and retired in 1980. He was a long time active member of the Godfrey Congregational Church where he sang in the choir. He was a volunteer for Meals On Wheals.
On July 24, 1943 in Hopkinsville, KY he married Alice Elizabeth Bartlett and she survives. Also surviving are 4 children; Winifred Streicher and her husband Larry of Westlake, OH, Steven Marsh and his wife Lorry of Union Town, KY, Jean Shimunek and her husband Rick of Alton and Sara Waterloo and her husband Tim of Glen Ellyn, Il. 8 grandchildren; Jenna, Geoffrey and Gregory Streicher, Andrew and Thomas Shimunek, Brian, Matthew and Paul Waterloo. 1 great grandchild; William Shimunek. One sister; Juliann Gressley of Port Townsend, WA. He was preceded in death by one brother; William Marsh and two sisters; Sylvia Marsh and Alice Patterson.
He loved to travel, and he had a knowledge and appreciation of trees and all the beauty of nature. He was a devoted family man and will be missed by all who loved him.
Visitation will be Wednesday, May 12, 2010 from 10:00 a.m. until time of service at 12:00 Noon at the Godfrey Congregational Church with Reverend Chris Hucker to officiate. Burial will be private at Bethany Cemetery in Godfrey. Memorials may be made to the Godfrey Congregational Church. Gent Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
